Counsultion

Free from hair, free from care

by Dr. Yuri Okabe & Dr. René du Cloo
Tokyo Skin Clinic

If you do not want to lie on the beach with hairy bikini lines or a bear-like torso, you have to get rid of the hair somehow.
Methods like shaving and waxing are called depilation and remove hair temporarily. Epilation or hair removal can be permanent, and electric and optical apparatuses are used to reach this goal.
Both electrolysis and laser and IPL (=intense pulse light) hair removal are considered as medical procedures in Japan: Strictly speaking, they must be performed by a doctor or under a doctor’s supervision. This regulation is based on the concept that damage to the tissue (in this case hair-forming cells) can be accompanied by side effects. It is probably possible to remove hair with minimal damage so that side effects are negligible. Less damage means less effect, however, so that it may result in more sessions to obtain the same effect.

In spite of its destructive nature, permanent epilation can also be truly therapeutic. It is often the only solution to problems like ingrown hairs and inflamed hair follicles, caused by depilation! In addition, laser and IPL irradiation improves skin appearance.
Whereas the alexandrite laser has been thought to be the golden standard, most currently available machines are safe and effective. All these optical devices target pigment in the hair, and can remove hair only safely if there is sufficient contrast between the hair and skin color. For dark and tanned skin, the Nd:YAG laser is more or less the only option.
